Help shape Upper Hutt’s Open Spaces Strategy

Our parks, playgrounds, rivers, bush reserves, tracks and trails help make Upper Hutt a great place to live.

We’re developing a new Open Spaces Strategy for 2027–2057 and want your feedback to help shape its direction and priorities before we write the first draft.

This strategy will guide how Council plans, manages and invests in our open spaces over the next 30 years. It covers parks, reserves, playgrounds, tracks and trails, rivers, natural areas and other public spaces for recreation, nature and community connection.

Have your say in three steps

  1. Read the document: Read our engagement document to understand the proposed direction and guiding principles.
  2. Complete the survey: Tell us how you use our open spaces, what you value about them, whether you agree with the proposed directions and what should be priotised for the future.
  3. Pin your feedback on the map: Use the interactive map to drop a pin on a specific location and tell us what you value, what could be improved or what's missing there.

What are we asking?

We’re asking about the big picture, not individual projects. We want to understand:

  • Whether our proposed direction and guiding principles are right.
  • How you use our open spaces and what you value most.
  • What’s missing and what should be prioritised over the next 30 years.

This is an early stage of developing the strategy. No specific projects have been proposed, and there are no project decisions to choose between.

Why your feedback matters

Your feedback will help test the foundations of the strategy and shape its long-term priorities that matter most to the people who live, work and spend time in Upper Hutt.

By sharing your views through the survey and adding location-specific feedback to the map, you can help shape both the overall strategy and our understanding of individual open spaces.

What happens next?

After engagement closes, we’ll use your feedback and other evidence to develop the first draft of the Open Spaces Strategy. Elected Members will then consider the draft before further public and stakeholder engagement.

The final strategy will guide how Council plans, manages and invests in Upper Hutt’s open spaces over the next 30 years.

Have your say by 12pm on 7 December.

We are not asking you to choose individual projects. Your feedback will help shape the first draft of the strategy.

The survey takes approximately 5 – 10 minutes.
